Updates on Indian Standards for Tires
12. May 2022The Indian standards for car tires have been revised and updated in April 2022 by the Bureau of Indian Standards(BIS) technical committee.
Since 2009 car tires have been covered by mandatory BIS-ISI certification in India. Until now, the standards IS 15633:2005 applied to passenger car tires, IS 15636:2016 to commercial vehicle tires and IS 15627 to tires for two- and three-wheelers, rickshaws and similar vehicles and small vehicles.
All three have now been updated and renamed IS 15633:2022, IS 15636:2022 and IS 15627:2022.
The new versions include the following changes:
IS 15633: 2022 | Pneumatic Tyres for Passenger Car Vehicles — Diagonal and Radial Ply — Specification |
– 3.3.4 The definition of reinforced tires has been reformulated: – 3.17. the designation tire size was extended – 3.20. another definition was added – 4.1.1.3. the design methods were specified more precisely. – 4.1.3.1. tire width limits were specified. – Marking requirements have been specified – 6.3. there are new requirements for testing tires with other nominal values than those listed in Annex C of the standard – 6.2.5.2: the material is now also decisive for the classification of the tire type. – the requirement of two-year quality control checks in production has been deleted without replacement. – the rules of marking with the standard logo of BIS have a different legal basis (no real change). – – Annex C 4.1.1 Test method for reinforced pneumatic tires has been changed to Annex B – Annex F 4.4.1 Procedure for bead acceptance test has now become Annex E 4.4 | |

– rickshaws and other small vehicles were added, as well as optional markings. – the material must be specified – the allowed width of tires was changed |
