PESO Certification Process
The PESO certification process comprises the following steps:
- Preparation of the application documents
- Tests for type approval (only for certain products)
- Factory audit (only for certain products such as pressure vessels)
- Document review
- Issue of the PESO certificate
- Issue of the license to the Authorized Indian Representative (AIR)
After the PESO license is issued, the product can be imported. The authority usually accepts internationally recognized test reports such as IECEx or ATEX. If you do not have these test reports, the products must be tested in India in any case.
Here is a brief video about the PESO certification, presented by Julian Busch, director of
MPR International GmbH:
How can I submit the application for PESO certification?
As with several of the other Indian certifications, a foreign company that wants to import its products into India needs a local agent in India (an Authorized Indian Representative – AIR) to apply for and maintain PESO approval. Furthermore, you can only submit such an application once you have a confirmed order from an Indian client.
What documents are required for the PESO application?
Please note that there are different document requirements for Indian and foreign companies. The catalogue of documents to be submitted should not be underestimated. Not only the technical but also the commercial aspects of the product can influence the type of certification.
Documents of the following categories must be provided for successful certification:
- Application documents (application form, contract with AIR for min. 5 years, technical competence proof of AIR, etc.).
- Company information (business licence of manufacturer, plant & AIR, global organisation chart incl. PESO responsible person, etc.).
- Product information (ATEX/ IECEx certificates, test reports, QAR/QAN, manufacturer profile, list of production equipment & test instruments, ISO certificates, video of production facility, etc.).
- Commercial information (sales figures for the last three years, list of Indian customers, documentary evidence such as user’s order copy/request, hazardous area installation information indicating installation location and intended use of the equipment, etc.).
The PESO approval process can therefore be challenging and complex. Efficient communication with the Indian authorities as well as accurate preparation of all relevant documents are essential for the successful application and implementation of PESO certification.

How long will PESO certification take?
Ideally, certification can be obtained within a quarter year. However, hardly any project corresponds to the ideal case, because both the recency of the submitted test reports and the completeness of the documents are points where mistakes can easily occur. It is therefore important to ensure that all documents are clean and up-to-date in order to limit queries from the authorities, which can be very lengthy. Please also note that the authority sometimes has very little time to correct documents, so that in extreme cases the process will have to be restarted.
PESO certificate validity
A PESO certificate is valid for 2 years and must be renewed after that. PESO licences for static pressure vessels can be applied for a maximum of 3 years and must then be renewed. Any modification to a machine or pressure vessel must be submitted for inspection. Read more on this topic in our article for PESO change management.
