What is the BEE Certification?

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) is an agency established by the Government of India under the Ministry of Energy. It was established in 2001 under the provisions of the Energy Conservation Act 2001. The aim of the BEE certification is to monitor the energy and cost savings targets. In India certain products are required to carry ratings and labels that indicate the product’s energy effeicency and to help customers to make purchasing decisions.

Standards and Labeling as Part of the BEE Registration for India

There are certain limit values for the energy consumption of products for energy efficiency which are described in the applicable standards. Manufactured products must meet these mandated energy consumption limits in order to receive the BEE approval.

There are standards set for energy consumption for electrical equipment such as air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines and coolants.

The labeling as part of the BEE registration covers the performance of a specific product, indicating how much energy the product uses.

Which Products need BEE registration?

The list of products subject to BEE India is constantly being expanded and already includes a wide range of different products. Examples are air conditioners, refrigerators, distribution transformers and fluorescent lamps. In addition, other products such as washing machines or televisions can also receive a voluntary BEE label.

Marking

The BEE marking must be placed on the product and includes star ratings from 1 to 5. BEE works with technical committees of experts and stakeholders, made up of representatives from industry, industry associations, consumer organizations and academics for the labeling.

There are two types of labels:

Comparative Label:
This label is used on the different models of the product so customers can get the right information. Here the star ratings 1 to 5 are used with the BEE logo and the license number.

Endorsement Label:
With this label the products are marked according to the minimum performance criteria for their respective product category
