What is BEE Certification
What is the BEE certification for the Indian market?
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) is an agency set up under the Ministry of Power by the government of India. The objective of BEE India is to monitor energy and cost saving. Certain items in this product category have the obligation to show ratings and labels that show the energy saving performance of the product and hence, aid customers in their choice of purchase. The higher the product gets rated, the more energy it saves. The main regulatory body or authority for BEE Certification in India is the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. This bureau was promulgated by the government in the year 2001 under the provisions of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001.
Standards and Labeling under BEE
There are particular limits known as standards related to energy efficiency. This applies to the consumption levels of manufactured products. Energy Consumption standards are present when it comes to electricity appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines and coolants.
When it comes to energy consumption, standards refer to the prescribed limits of energy consumption by a particular product. The products which are manufactured have to be within prescribed limits related to energy.
Labelling under BEE registration includes the performance of a particular product. Which shows the amount of energy utilized by it.
The Different Labels
The labels need to be marked on the product i.e. star ratings from 1 to 5. For labelling, BEE works with technical committees of experts and stakeholders, comprising of representatives from industry, industry association, consumer organizations, academia,
There are two types of labels:
- Comparative label:
Using this label, there are specific markings on the different models of the product, giving customers the right information i.e. star ratings 1 to 5 with BEE logo and license number on it.
- Endorsement label:
Here, products are marked according to their minimum performance criteria for their respective product category.
What products are covered by the BEE license?
The list is constantly being extended and already covers a wide range of various products. Examples are air conditioniers, refrigerators, distribution transformers, and fluorescent lamps.
Additionally, other products like washing machines or TVs may receive a voluntary BEE label.
