Department of Telecommunications (DoT)
12. May 2024The Department of Telecommunications, abbreviated DoT, is a department of the Ministry of Communications, Government of India.
The telecom services are globally recognized as an important tool for the socio-economic development of a nation, and hence the telecom infrastructure is considered to be a crucial factor in achieving the socio-economic goals in India. Accordingly, the Ministry of Telecommunications has formulated a development policy for the accelerated growth of telecommunications services. The ministry is also responsible for issuing licenses for various telecommunications services such as Unified Access Service, Internet and VSAT service. The department is also responsible for spectrum management in the field of radio communications in close coordination with international bodies. It also enforces the regulatory measures for mobile communications by monitoring the wireless transmission of all users in the country.
The Commission for Digital Communications (formerly Telecommunications Commission)
The Telecommunications Commission was established by the Government of India by the resolution of 11 April 1989 with administrative and financial powers of the Government of India to deal with various aspects of telecommunications. In a resolution of 22 October 2018, the government renamed the “Telecom Commission” to the “Digital Communications Commission”.
The Commission for Digital Communications is responsible for:
- Formulation of the policy of the Ministry of Telecommunications for approval by the government
- Preparation of the budget for the Telecommunications Division for each financial year and its approval by the Government
- Implementation of the government’s policy in all matters relating to telecommunications
