Five Products Removed from the TEC Certification List
27. May 2022The Telecommunications Engineering Centre (TEC) has removed five products from the list for mandatory TEC certification. These are products that would otherwise require both BIS registration and TEC certification.
At the beginning of the year TEC had just announced that mandatory certification will be extended for various products. Among them were products that were already subject to BIS registration, which led to some confusion among manufacturers. The additional certification with TEC not only means additional costs for the manufacturers, but also potentially delays the market launch of new products.
Now the Department of Telecom (DoT) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) have reacted. In comparing the regulations, the two authorities have found that the requirements for BIS registration and TEC certification are very similar for the products in question. Therefore, they decided to waive the TEC certification in these cases. However, the products must still be BIS certified.
The innovation is intended to facilitate certification for new products and thus market access for companies in India. It is also intended to avoid import problems.
Once the official notification is issued by the ministry, the following products will no longer be required to TEC certification, but must still be BIS certified:
- POS devices with or without biometric scanners
- Smart Watch
- Smart camera
- Mobile devices including handsets, tablets with SIM and data cards
- Servers
The change shows once again that the Indian regulatory landscape is constantly evolving. It is not always a question of extending the certification requirement. The ministries also review existing regulations and take suggestions from the business community into account.
