AIS Certification Process

AIS Certification Process

What are the steps in the AIS authorisation process?

A vehicle consists of a huge number of completely different parts / components, therefore there are also various processes, which can differ depending on the product type. These are based on the Automotive Indian Standards, issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
Basically, an AIS certification process for automotive products can comprise the following steps at most:

  1. Preparation and review of the application documents
  2. Submission of an application
  3. Tests for AIS certification
  4. Factory inspection
  5. Issue of the AIS certificate
  6. Marking and labelling of the component

However, depending on the type of product, a distinction must be made between safety requirements or electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements. For safety-relevant components, therefore, tests in India and, in all probability, a factory inspection by Indian auditors are to be expected. However, when testing electromagnetic compatibility of electronic components, under certain conditions tests in India can be dispensed with and approval can be obtained through so-called “witness tests” (where Indian auditors witness in-house tests at the customer’s premises).

Here is a brief video about the AIS certification, presented by Julian Busch, director of
MPR International GmbH / China Certification Corporation:

How must the component be marked?

After successful completion of product testing and factory inspection, the AIS certified component can be marked with the appropriate label. The information on the label must contain the following points according to the corresponding AIS standard: brand/manufacturer name, a unique ID code, the AIS type approval number and the marking specified by the standard. Where the label is applied to the component is left to the manufacturer. The AIS type approval number is composed of six digits, consisting of a code of the test agency, the calendar year and the AIS certificate number.

What is the factory inspection procedure?

For the factory inspection, an auditor from India is sent to the factory for up to two days to check the company’s quality system. The COP audit is carried out by an approved organization such as the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the ACMA (Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India) or iCAT (International Centre for Automotive Technology).

However, there are also cases where no factory inspection is required. If only electromagnetic compatibility is required, for example, a factory inspection is not always necessary. Furthermore, in such a case, tests in India can also be dispensed with and instead a witness test can be carried out in the manufacturer’s laboratories.

How long is the AIS certificate valid?

In order to maintain the validity of the AIS certificate, a follow-up audit normally takes place every two years. In addition, regular tests must be carried out on randomly selected samples. How often this is necessary can be seen in the production conformity lists (COP).
